The Story

Martin Custom Shop HD28 Cocobolo with Adirondack Spruce

Truetone Music was invited to Nazareth, PA for a very special visit. We had the chance to spec out guitars to be custom built by Martin. We were also thrilled by the prospect of being able to hand select our own wood at the factory, aided by Custom Shop representatives and tonewood experts. That began a relationship that has continued for multiple custom runs over a number of years.

We knew we wanted to represent an interesting variety as far as models and exotic woods, but we also wanted the guitars to sound as best they could, never sacrificing tone for bling.

This Martin Custom Shop version of an HD28 with Cocobolo and Adirondack Spruce is a true example of that theory coming together in the best possible way. This is one of (if not THE) best Martin guitars we've ever had here, and we've had a lot. The look of the guitar itself would be enough, but the materials, construction and appointments make it all the more special.

The stunning hand-selected Cocobolo is the main feature. However, as beautiful as it is, this wasn't done just for aesthetics. Cocobolo, a dense, stiff tropical hardwood, is highly desired due to it's tone. It's bright and similar to Koa, but resonates deeper on the low end - which makes it perfect for a dreadnought like this Custom Shop HD28. That strong bass response, mixed with sparkling treble notes, makes this one of the harmonically impressive guitars we've heard. It's balanced and can be used for a wide variety of styles.

On this guitar, we also chose an Adirondack Spruce top, which tends to be the loudest and liveliest of spruces. Compared to Sitka, Adirondack has greater overtone content and dynamic range. It produces a rich, sweet mid-range tone, which makes it a perfect complement to the Cocobolo on this guitar.

We didn't stop there. To add to the uniqueness, we chose European Flamed Maple for the binding - which really sets the body off and draws attention to the uniqueness of this build. The 3-ring bold herringbone black maple fiber rosette is another nice touch. It's safe to say that you've never seen a guitar exactly like this!

The neck is Martin’s popular modified low oval with high performance taper, making it very comfortable to play for hours. The radius is 16” with a nut width of 1 3/4”. The guitar is finished in gloss with a satin finished neck. It comes with a Martin hard shell case and certificate of authenticity.
